General, Acute & Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is a very common condition in the UK that can occur in adults of all ages. It can vary in severity and be felt constantly or present symptoms that occur intermittently. Depending on the cause of the pain, it may go away within a few weeks or it could progress into a long term problem. There are different types of back pain and many causes of it, so a professional diagnosis is both necessary and important to identify the best treatment.

The spine is a highly complex structure and the central support system of the human body. It is made up of joints, discs, ligaments, tendons and muscles so there can be many causes of back pain that may be hard to identify. General pain can remain in one area of the back or spread to other areas of the body, either coming on abruptly or developing in severity over time. Back ache that persists for 12 weeks or longer is defined as chronic back pain which can become progressively worse if left untreated.

Lower Back Pain (Lumbago)

Acute back pain is a particularly common complaint in many of our patients, especially in the lower back (Lumbago). Acute pain is sharp and often comes on suddenly due to a problem with the movement of the muscles, ligaments or discs in the spine. Aching, stiffness or muscle tensions in the lower back are often symptoms of Lumbago which can disrupt everyday routines and movement. Studies have shown that lower back pain is the leading cause of sickness and disability globally, becoming more common with increasing age. For many, low back pain will improve in a short period of time however if there are no signs of improvement it is important to seek professional advice.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a common type of pain that starts at the lower back and extends down into one or both legs. It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body that runs from the lumbar spine, through the buttocks and down to the legs and feet. A range of common back problems can lead to pain along the sciatic nerve which can vary in intensity. The symptoms of sciatic nerve pain can range from mild tingling to a sharp, shooting pain that makes it very difficult to sit or stand up. Sciatica usually affects one side of the body and most people find that the leg pain is more severe than the pain experienced in the lower back.
